Featured Resource: Southern Cover Crops Council Website

The more we learn, the more there is to learn. The sharing of stories, experiences, and research are critical for advancing soil health and protecting natural resources. With cover crops, we are only beginning to learn about the benefits of cover crop mixtures, interactions, crop sequencing, and potential synergies through time. In the recent 4 The Soil: A Conversation podcast episode with Bill Patterson of Virginia USDA-NRCS, Bill mentioned a number of winter and summer cover crops he uses in his home garden to build soil health and produce flavorful tomatoes and vegetables.

The Southern Cover Crops Council is a regional organization that advocates for the best cover crop practices in the souther region of the U.S. On their website, the Council provides a number of informational and networking resources including a cover crop selection tool for vegetables, row crops, and grazing lands. Additionally, the site provides sources of seeds, equipment rental, local experts, and financial assistance.

The website continues to expand and be built out so if you know of other local and regional resources that can be added to the site, please let the Virginia Soil Health Coalition and Souther Cover Crops Council know so more stories, experiences, and research can be shared in Virginia and across the Southern region.
